Meet ASCA’s New Board President

ASCA Board members elected Mark Wainner, senior director of ASC Acquisition and Development at Community Health Systems (CHS) in Franklin, Tennessee, as the new board president during the ASCA 2024 Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida, April 17–20.

In his current role, Wainner, a healthcare industry veteran with more than 30 years of healthcare experience, is responsible for growing CHS’ ASC division through ASC acquisition and de novo projects. Prior to joining CHS, he was responsible for developing the SurgeryPlus network with Employer Direct Healthcare. He spent 23 years contributing to the growth of Amsurg in the surgery center industry. His primary focuses were strategies to drive top-line growth and operational efficiencies that deliver greater profitability.

"I have spent the majority of my professional career performing numerous roles in the surgery center industry," Wainner said. "I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as president of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and look forward to continuing to work with our surgery center members, ASCA team members, vendors, affiliates, government entities, legislators and sponsors to support the mission and goals of the association."

Wainner has an extensive professional network cultivated through affiliations with ASCA, Nashville Health Care Council and Leadership Health Care. He has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He enjoys boating, wake surfing, being outdoors, attending sporting events and spending time with his family.

The ASCA Board also named Gary Richberg, RN, CASC, chief executive officer (CEO) of Bellingham Urology Group in Bellingham, Washington, as vice president; Todd Currier, CASC, administrator of Bend Surgery Center in Bend, Oregon, as treasurer; and Rena Courtay, CASC, vice president of Ambulatory Surgery for Trinity Health based in Livonia, Michigan, as secretary.

Three new members joined the ASCA Board this year: Lisa Cooper, CEO of Santa Cruz Surgery Center in Santa Cruz, California; Alfonso del Granado, CEO and administrator of Covenant High Plains Surgery Centers in Lubbock, Texas; and Jon Van Valkenburg, CASC, executive director of Upstate Orthopedics Ambulatory Surgery Center in East Syracuse, New York.

The two incumbent members are Tyler Marks, MD, orthopedic surgeon at SOG Surgery Center in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Stuart Simon, MD, chief medical director of United Surgical Partners International in Addison, Texas. Outgoing President Mandy Hawkins, RN, CAIP, CASC, CEO of Three Hawks Advisors in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, also remains on the board as immediate past president.

ASCA Board members serve three-year terms, and ASCA bylaws require that at least one-third of its board members be physicians. These members also serve on the ASCA Foundation Board. ASCA Board officers serve two-year terms.
