If you run an ASC, odds are you have medical equipment that you don’t own flowing in and out of your facility almost daily. There are rentals, demos, trials, loaners, physician owned equipment, and more. We call these Transient Assets. According to CMS guidelines ALL equipment in use in the patient environment is subject to the same regulations and that equipment is 100% the responsibility of the ASC while in use. Transient Assets are a necessary part of running an OR but these devices often travel a lot. This is hard on equipment and increases the likelihood of the occurrence of safety issues.  This means that without written policy and procedures, and proper documentation, these devices become liabilities.

With procedures in place for performing incoming inspections, documentation, and asset tracking, these devices can continue to serve ASCs well without the risk.
