ASCs have become an integral part of the healthcare system, providing cost-effective, high-quality surgical care in an outpatient setting. The success of ASCs is evident in their rapid growth over the past few decades. According to ASCA, approximately 4,000 ASCs performed 8 million surgeries in the US annually in 2004; and today, more than 6,200 Medicare-certified ASCs perform more than 23 million procedures annually. This growth is driven by several factors, including advancements in medical technology, changes in reimbursement models favoring outpatient care and patient preferences for less invasive procedures with quicker recovery times.
