While the healthcare landscape went through many changes in recent years, the number of ASCs continued to increase steadily with the number of Medicare-certified ASCs growing from 5,400 in 2015 to approximately 6,200 in 2023, according to ASCA. The March 2022 MedPAC report states that between 2019 and 2020, the number of ASCs increased by 1.9 percent to include a total of nearly 18,000 operating room suites where 6.7 million services were provided. At the same time, according to a study published in the March 2022 edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, orthopedic services performed in ASCs have increased to 34 percent and the cost for performing the same procedures in hospitals averaged 26 percent higher. Finally, the addition of knee replacements in 2020 and hip replacements in 2021 to Medicare’s ASC Covered Procedures List (ASC-CPL) projects continued expansion and growth in this space.
