The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has issued an update to its “Statement on Granting Privileges for Administration of Moderate Sedation to Practitioners Who are Not Anesthesia Professionals.” Accessible on ASA’s website, this is a guide to how to credential non-anesthesiology professionals to provide sedation. Its intent is to provide a framework that will help ensure the competence of non-anesthesia professionals to administer or supervise the safe administration of moderate sedation.

Leopoldo Rodriguez, MD, chairs the committee on ambulatory surgical care. He also is the immediate past president of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA) and medical director of the Surgery Center of Aventura in Aventura, Florida.
