Daly, Deas Receive ASCA’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award

ASCA awarded this year’s Nap Gary Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement in the ASC Community to Peter Daly, MD, chief medical officer and cofounder of One World Surgery, and Thomas M. Deas, Jr., MD, retired vice president of physician engagement at North Texas Specialty Physicians.

ASCA Board President Michael Patterson presented the award to Daly and Deas on Wednesday, April 27, during the opening session of the ASCA 2022 Conference & Expo in Dallas, Texas.

Peter Daly, MD

Daly is an orthopedic surgeon with Summit Orthopedics who specializes in shoulder, hip and knee conditions. He and his wife, LuLu, a pediatric nurse, started the Holy Family Surgery Center in Honduras in 2008; in 2017, they joined with Surgical Care Affiliates Medical Missions to form One World Surgery.

The ASCA Foundation offers a scholarship program for ASCA members interested in medical mission opportunities through One World Surgery. Thanks in part to support from the ASCA Foundation, One World Surgery is also constructing a second surgery center in the Dominican Republic.

When presenting the award, Patterson recognized Daly’s work in providing surgical care and other services to underserved communities in both countries, where One World Surgery staff have embraced the concept of service and transformed lives.

Thomas M. Deas, Jr., MD

Deas, a former ASCA Board member, serves as a physician development coach at TCU School of Medicine. He is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology and served for 20 years in the US Air Force, retiring as colonel. Deas held numerous leadership positions in the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), including a term as president.

Patterson commended Deas for his contributions as an outspoken advocate for maximizing the value ASCs provide and for improving patient care using health information technology and improved delivery systems.

The ASCA Board of Directors established the Nap Gary Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement in the ASC Community to recognize individuals whose contributions have made a difference in the ASC industry. Presented to members of the ASC community with a record of longevity and dedication to ambulatory surgery, the award is named in honor of Nap Gary, who exemplified the qualities of integrity, dedication, mentorship, leadership and loyalty, and the high ethical and moral standards the award recognizes.
