While advances in medical technology and changes in Medicare payment policy have expanded the list of procedures for which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will reimburse ASCs, Medicare policies still lag innovation. ASCA routinely encourages CMS to add procedure codes to its ASC-payable list after ASC clinicians attest that ASCs can safely perform those procedures on Medicare patients. Since 2013, the agency has added 119 codes to the ASC-payable list that were previously reimbursed in hospitals only, most as a direct response to ASCA advocacy.
